Working at HMP Addiewell

We deliver relevant skills via training and employment and work with all areas of the wider community to ensure that residents have the best possible chance of leading positive lives following release.

Addiewell opened in 2008 and has become an integral part of the Scottish Prison Service estate earning much praise from (amongst others) HMCIP, for its innovation, use of technology, strong partnership working as well as its “can do” culture.

We are proud to be a major local employer. As well as Prison Custody Officers, we need a wide range of employees to help us achieve our purpose of changing lives for the better.

Some of the existing roles we have to offer include tutors, administrators, electricians, IT specialists and maintenance staff.

What does it take to be a Prison Custody Officer (PCO)?

Great Prison Custody Officers (PCOs) build trust.

They are responsible and reliable. They really care about doing a good job and can easily connect with people.

They ‘tell it as it is’ in clear and simple language anyone can understand and relate to.

Great PCOs are fair and consistent. They don’t judge others and can see past people’s histories and convictions.

People trust and respect them because they are honest, straight-forward and do what they say they will.

They are constantly alert to what’s happening around them.

Above all great PCOs get things done.

People enjoy being a PCO for many reasons.  Some enjoy the variety and challenge of working with very different people and dealing with all sorts of issues. Others get a buzz from seeing the prisoners improve and progress (however small the changes).

Many PCOs appreciate the security and stability of the regular work routines. Others appreciate shift patterns, which allow them flexibility to carry out their responsibilities outside of work.

A career in one of our prisons

Working in a prison might not be what you think…

A lot more goes on in a prison than people may realise. As well as running the prison by providing food, cleaning, laundry, facilities management and security, there is also every role you would expect to find in any other business – finance, admin, HR, IT.

And when it comes to supporting prisoners our focus is on rehabilitation. We have roles in education, workshops, industries, healthcare plus we run programs for prisoners to support rehabilitation and deal with offending behavior.

But more than anything it’s about making a difference and changing lives for the better.
